Just like my idol Martha Stewart, I’m far too interested in too many things to settle for doing just one. Or at least that’s my excuse. But while Martha may naturally excel in all crafty/home-related skill sets, I have to settle with the whole trial and error process.
In order to ‘fine-tune’ my kitchen abilities, I’ve been moonlighting at a bakery and can say with enthusiasm (and a certain level of mysticism) that baking is that fine line between art and science. I’ve recently learned how to bake breads, and so much soul goes into each loaf: every calculation, improvisation, precision, every meticulous yet organic formation, much anticipation. Personally, I find little difference between bread baking and pottery.
So, I think it’s safe to call baking a form of ‘art’, especially when it comes to the work of passionate artisans such as the bakers/owners of Tartine bakery in San Francisco. This short film documents personal stories of Tartine bakers…and their bread. Sounds pretentious but is entirely honest and endearing
